Tulip Jhumki

At Ahalya, much of our design is rooted in tradition, viewed through a contemporary lens. Pieces may feel familiar in their use of classic forms, yet remain unexpected in the way those classics are interpreted.

A client came to us seeking a pair of jhumkis that were not overly traditional – a pair of earrings that were substantial yet not heavy, adaptable across contexts, and able to make a statement on their own. Traditionally, jhumkis are paired with equally traditional and weighty pieces – such as elaborate necklaces and stacks of bangles. But we wanted to create a piece that could hold its own.

We designed a jhumki with a subtly contemporary silhouette – more elongated, like an upturned tulip, rather than the classic umbrella form. It finishes with a row of pearls set at an unusual angle, instead of a flat or horizontal edge. This angle is technically challenging to achieve, but it allows the pearls to sit in gentle contrast with the diamonds.

The stud portion of the earring is floral in design, featuring an unexpected pearl setting at the centre, with tapering petals radiating outward. The precise sizing of the diamonds for these petals is critical, lending the piece its delicate appearance. The thoughtful placement and proportion of gemstones create an overall sense of balance.

We love reinterpreting classic forms through a contemporary lens, and truly believe this pair of jhumkis adapts beautifully to varied occasions and styling choices. It works just as elegantly as a standalone piece as it does when paired with a string of pearls.
